Chiropractor Eden Prairie, MN-Common Question
A question that comes up often when a patient comes in with neck pain or back pain is: "What did I do to cause this problem if I don't remember a specific time that I hurt it?".
This is a great question to ask with a very simple answer. Chances are they didn't really "do" any one thing. In my experience spinal pain is very rarely caused by one traumatic event, it is much more likely to have been caused by neglecting your spine over a long period of time.
A great analogy for this situation would be asking your dentist "What did I do that caused this cavity in my tooth?" Chances are the Dentist would tell you to take better care of your teeth to prevent this problem in the future. Flossing, brushing and rinsing more often are all things you can do to prevent dental problems.
We all understand that if we neglect our teeth it isn't a matter of IF, but WHEN we will have dental issues. The dental industry has done a wonderful job of educating all of us over the years and it has prevented countless dental surgeries. We all understand the need to prevent dental problems.
If we can learn to apply this same principle to our spine we could prevent the lion's share of spinal problems and spinal pain from every occurring.
Regular spinal adjustments can keep all the joints, discs, muscles, tendons, and ligaments that make up the spine functioning well. If a joint is functioning the way in which it was intended, it can handle the daily stresses we put on our body much better and we will be able to prevent many of the spinal problems that I see in my office from ever occurring.
Never forget the old saying, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". This is as true for the spine as it is for our teeth.
Chiropractor Eden Prairie, MN-Car accidents and Chiropractic
Any automobile accident causes injury to the body, even with a slow or low impact crash. This results in misalignment along your spine that eventually will lead to problems elsewhere, such as an organ or system malfunction. Remember, all parts of the body are connected and work in unison with each other. A problem in one part of the body will lead to other troubles elsewhere. A doctor of chiropractic is trained to find these misalignments and work to correct them with specific spinal adjustments.
If you are experiencing any symptoms, it is an indicator that there is some kind injury resulting in tears of soft tissues in the body. If a vertebra moves out of its normal alignment, it causes irritation to the nerve that exits the spine in that area causing neck pain, headaches, low back pain and many othere symptoms. Because of the initial worries about damage to the car, many auto accident victims do not feel like they've been injured until a few days after the accident.
Sometimes damage is not detected until months or even years after an accident. Just like someone discovering they are dying from cancer or heart disease, these diseases develop "silently" and the patient has had the disease for many years, they just didn’t know it until they had outward signs of health which unfortunately comes in the final stages. Absence of symptoms does not necessarily equal a clean bill of health! The cause always comes before the symptoms.
When you've been involved in a car accident, it is essential that you seek help from a professional who understands how to care for these injuries immediately before the damage becomes permanent. Do not wait until you are in agony, be proactive about your body and seek help immediately.
Chiropractor Eden Prairie-Keys to a preventing low back pain
1. Exercise regularly. Keeping your body moving with exercise allows blood to be circulated to all of the tissues of the body and keeps the tissue pliable and prevents injury.
2. Drink Plenty of water. Keeping your body fully hydrated can increase the thickness of our spinal discs and help prevent low back pain.
3. Get Adjusted. Research shows that spinal problems can be present long before symptoms ever present themselves. Regular spinal check-ups can take care of these spinal problems before pain ever presents itself.
Do these 3 things and you'll be well on your way to having a pain free low back.
Migraine Headaches
When seeking options for how to treat your migraine headaches, it can be very confusing with all of the information out there on what to do. I came across a study this morning from the University of Maryland Medical School that can shed some light on the subject for those of you who are suffering.

Chiropractic care, in my experience, can be extremely effective in reducing the intensity and frequency with which the headaches occur.

J Manipulative Physiol Ther 2004, vol. 27(5), pp. 336-347
There were two papers published in 2004 and 2007, authored by a medical physician and chiropractic physician (Sarnat and Winterstein) which studied the effects of chiropractic management. After gathering and analyzing seven years of data they found that chiropractic users experienced:
85% lower pharmaceutical costs (the number one cost drive in the system)
60% fewer hospitalizations
62% fewer surgical cases
Less outpatient diagnostic tests (MRI, CT, Blood Work)
Improved satisfaction reported by patients
Many times a Doctor of Chiropractic is able to manage your health care needs utilizing much more cost effective means of improving your overall health and wellness.

Making Changes
What I have found is making small changes and staying consistent with them over time is what causes real change in a person's life.
Let's say you want to start eating better, that can be a big hurdle to overcome. So the best way to do it is to start with something small. They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Why not start there. When you have mastered that change and it has become part of your routine you can add another and another, until a year has gone by and you didn't even realize all the changes you had made over the past year.
Whatever you want to change in your life, start with the smallest thing you can think of that moves you in the direction of your goal. The feeling you get from your early success in the right direction will motivate you to get there even faster.

Resolutions
Have you?
Re-commit yourself to change. Start today! Research shows that people who write out their goals and review them daily are almost 50% more likely to actually accomplish said goal.
Do you have S.M.A.R.T goals?
Are they Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results oriented and do they have a specific Timetable?
Here are a couple of ideas to help you reach those goals:
-Write out your goals and place them in multiple places in your home and workplace to remind you as often as possible.
-Share your goals with a friend and ask them to hold you accountable. This will help motivate you because someone will be monitoring your progress.
Today is the day! Re-commit to the change you would like to see happen in 2011 and make this your healthiest year ever!
